BRIDGET RILEY’S ARIA (AZURE) BRINGS OPTICAL ART TO THE YELLOW BUILDING

Celebrating a British icon

We’re excited to announce that The Yellow Building is now home to a striking new artwork by Bridget Riley, one of the pioneers of British modern art. Known for her creative use of colour and patterns, Riley’s work continues to captivate audiences with its optical illusions and dynamic compositions.

Aria (Azure) showcases Riley’s contribution to the ‘Op Art’ movement, which first gained popularity in the 1960s. The installation is part of her renowned ‘Stripes’ series, which she began in 1971. These works are characterised by vertical and horizontal stripes that play with the viewer’s perception, creating an optically challenging yet stimulating experience.

Riley’s work draws heavily on her experiences and observations from places she’s been and seen, including her upbringing in coastal Cornwall and her travels across the globe. Her ability to translate these diverse influences into compelling visual art is what makes her one of the greats in modern art. This new installation at The Yellow Building is a key part of Notting Dale’s dedication to arts and culture, enhancing the environment and creating an inspiring, creative atmosphere for its inhabitants and visitors.
