RAGNA BLEY’S STUNNING ‘LOW SKY CALLING’ RADIATES INSPIRATION IN THE GEORGE BUILDING

Colours collide across the contemporary canvas

Our campus is home to a new piece of art by Ragna Bley, an incredible contemporary artist based in Oslo. Born in Uppsala, Sweden, Bley focuses on the interplay between the known and the alien, through art that hints at familiar shapes, ultimately leading to interpretation and conversation. Her piece, ‘Low Sky Calling’ (2022) is acrylic on canvas, adding a new layer of dynamism to The George Building’s reception.

A master of her medium, Bley’s work looks to narratives of biology, literature and science fiction. This exploration leads to incredibly layered and detailed art, with more to be uncovered in every viewing of her work. The observer is invited to interpret ‘Low Sky Calling’ in any which way they want, as infinite angles of possibility exist within the deep colours of the canvas.

Within the transparencies of the piece, that resemble forms ambiguous in nature, Bley traverses representation and abstraction. This interesting blend of colour, application and complexity is a welcome addition to our campus and embellishes our relationship with art and introspection.
