Frestonian Gallery is thrilled to present our inaugural solo exhibition by Cara Nahaul. Showcasing vibrantly colored and elegantly balanced compositions, the works draw inspiration from the lush landscapes and cultural tapestry of Mauritius, the homeland of the artist’s father and family. The island’s rich history as a crossroads of colonial trade, indentured labor, and cultural convergence is intricately woven into its architecture, bustling markets, and serene coastal villages.
This exhibition invites viewers to reflect on the concept of “livelihood,” exploring its significance beyond mere economic sustenance to embrace the spirit of a place and its people. Through themes of labor, memory, and aspiration, Nahaul captures the profound imprints left on both individuals and their communities.
Born in London in 1987, Cara Nahaul earned her BA from Goldsmiths, University of London, and her MFA from Parsons The New School for Design in New York.
Her work has been featured in esteemed galleries and institutions, including Galerie Camille Pouyfaucon, Paris; Taymour Grahne Projects, London; Sargent’s Daughters, Los Angeles; YiYuan Tang Museum, Shanghai; National Assembly and Seojung Art Center, Seoul; The Stables Gallery, Richmond Museum, London and many more.
